married Anna Matilda Petersen about 1865, according to divorce records
labeled a workman in birth records
they moved to new port city of Esbjerg, Jerne sogn, Ribe amt, between 1868 and 1870, probably in part to avoid Prussian occupation and draft, and to take advantage of the construction work available
came alone to US with son Henry about sometime between 1872 and 1881 (probably closer to 1881) settled in NYC (NJ)
deserted wife soon after that for another woman; Henry stayed with father in NYC (NJ)
Anna Matilda divorced Karl September, 1888, in Burlington

Anna Matilda (Ana Matilde) Petersen (Pedersen) Martensen Thyggesen (Thygesen, Thygersen, Thygessen, Thyggessen, Tygesen, Tikesen)
born May 27, 1841 (Vieno Martensen made a note in her family tree that the year should be 1844, not 1841, but I don’t know her source; 1841 is in several sources), Neukirchen parish, Schleswig, Denmark (now in Germany)
died June 12, 1914, West Burlington
funeral at St. Paul's Evangelical Church (now UCC), West Burlington (identified as German Methodist Church in obit)
buried Aspen Grove
came to US sometime between 1879 to 1883 with younger son Cornelius; Glenn Martensen said she went first to New Jersey to visit Henry, and confront her husband and the woman with whom he lived
Cornelius recalled he was about seven years old on the journey, and shipwrecked along the way, adrift in a lifeboat for more than a day, lost all possessions
record of Anna M. Petersen sailing on the “Thingvalla” Copenhagen to NYC October 6, 1883 (though no mention of a shipwreck)
not mentioned on any passenger list of shipwrecked passenger steamships in 1979-1883, but those published lists are not always complete; some minor wrecks probably not even reported
went on to Burlington after she found Karl living with the other woman
identified as wife of Markus Thyggesen by 1884
divorced former husband Karl Jensen Martensen September, 1888, in Burlington, for drunkenness and desertion, to safeguard property she said she had bought
